randomthingsthatilike123:

so i was thinking about that post, about how maladaptive coping methods were at one point adaptive and do you think about how Kara and Lena both react to conflict and betrayal?

Kara is influenced by the shadow of kryptons destruction in her every action–how many people do you think she wishes she can see one last time? maybe she thinks about how stupid that one fight was in the light of such overwhelming loss and how she holds on tight to people no matter what. no matter how much they hurt her.

James and Winn lied to her for months after she was nothing but honest to them, where she didn’t even have a choice to tell James her secret, where this is something James can choose but Kara will never stop being an alien, who’s living in a deeply xenophobic society and still James and Winn were the ones who lied.

how j’onn was actually an alien but treated her like she was gum on his shoe and had her shot of the sky with Kryptonite and wouldn’t let Alex tell Kara about being in the DEO for 3 years.

Alex never went against orders and told Kara she was part of the DEO (aka alien Guantanamo) and killed her aunt. alex said it herself–clark abandoned her. astra tried to kill her and her sister but again Kara forgives her, because Astra is dying and what else left is there to do?

lena creates the thing that tortures her. the thing that killed and tortured her aunt (also there are plenty of things that can kill humans but when loved ones are killed by a certain thing, like a knife, or a gun, or even a dog humans tend to really hate the thing that killed them) and after the initial freakout she still extends her hand in friendship. and you know what? maybe Kara forgives too easily

it’s not really a criticism of lena but with everything that happened with Lillian and lex I think a lot about lena and her inability to forgive can be summed up as I finally love myself enough to be angry about how I was treated. and for someone who was always told she wasn’t good enough and had people who should have loved her try to kill her this isn’t the worst attitude to have..

whereas Kara kind of just. takes it. and keeps taking all of it. and there isn’t really talk for Kara any more about how to get past her anger and the betrayal

it’s that John mulaney quote- I’m going to hold all of my emotions right here and then one day I’ll die.“

whereas lena maybe needs to look at her one strike you’re out of my life policy if she wants to have healthy relationships w people bc people fuck up without it being an abusive kind of situation. it just happens. like. if Kara truly was acting like Lillian she would have said James was lying and he’s doing this because they used to date and he doesn’t want lena and supergirl to be friends (psa i am not saying this is what happened THIS IS THE BEING LIKE LILLIAN SCENARIO I JUST WANT TO BE CLEAR) but she owned up to it and was like ok we need to talk about this I did do that and i want to still be friends but all Lena can see is a repeat of her mother and lex and immediately cuts ties and metaphorically runs.

tl;dr lena and Kara both need therapy. so much fucking therapy. please someone bring them and everyone else to therapy.

friendly reminder that grown ass humans can easily be brought to our knees by parental units.

My ideal mother/daughter reunion:

1.) Confusion turned pure joy at the family reunited, hugs and face touching and “you’re so big, look at you!”

2.) Excited talking that has some small clashes, Alura is a lot more dry than Kara remembers, Kara isn’t as amendable as an adult. Kara speaks in a mix of Kryptonian and English because there are some words her childhood language didn’t teach her, alura remarks that Kara has lost some of her accent

3.) Mon-El says something and Alura snaps at a Daxamite interjecting when two Kryptonians speak. Kara remembers then the elitism and classism of her people. Tries to push through it, still riding that endorphin high but the creeping dread approaches.

4.) Kara mentions her sister without thinking, Alura says she doesn’t have a sister. Kara tells her about the Danvers and it’s a mix of happiness at someone caring for her baby and sadness that she didn’t get to be there for the majority of her life.

5.) both make cultural references the other doesn’t get, jokes that don’t translate. Awkward silence in the face of this person you love so deeply but do not recognize.

6.) a level of scepticism neither can shake, because is this REALLY their lost loved one? Or is it a trick? How can they ever know for sure?

sapphictionalgirls:

hi so um, so can you imagine a scene where Lena continues to call Kara out about her god complex by comparing how close her mortality has been compromised just in the past year and Kara finally breaks and yells “Don’t you think I know how fragile you are! How am I supposed to keep you alive if I’m dead!”

because the only god complex Kara has is “I have to be invincible because the people I love are not”

Was talking with @tomas-abe about this–have you ever thought
of a supergirl leverage au?

Honestly, I’ve talked so much about how Kara isn’t a
horrible liar—she’s a phenomenal liar. She makes everyone
think she’s a bumbling, harmless, ordinary, average human—her kindness isn’t a
lie, but as we’ve seen with RedK—it is a choice. And we’ve seen her with
Clark— “you really have the clumsy thing down.” But for Clark that was real. For
Kara, it’s an act. She’s the heir to a house renowned throughout the galaxy for
its scientists—and she was about to become the youngest person in Krypton’s
history to enter the science guild. But she was told over and over and over to
be ordinary, average, unremarkable—to hide herself, hide anything that marks
her as alien. She’s a genius in a room full of preschoolers who are just now
learning concepts that she’s understood since before she could walk—of course
she’s bored with earth science.

Supergirl isn’t a
lie, but it’s not quite the truth either—and neither is Kara Danvers. Both are
part of her, but at the same time they’re both personas that she embodies and
can step into almost at the drop of a hat—they are constructed and built. And
yes, when outright confronted, she is a horrible bluff—she can’t do it. But
almost everyone forgets or glosses over how much pain Kara must always be in,
the anger she carries inside of her of being the very last, of being sent away,
of being alone. They forget that she is not simply a human with powers but
forever and always Kryptonian with powers—like how everyone thinks of Clark, like
we’ve seen in Myriad how even Clark
thinks of himself, Kara never thinks of herself as human. She has a different
language and values and culture and religion and she fools everyone into
thinking that she’s just like them(for more about this,
here’s the post I made that’s a lot more comprehensive
). That isn’t Kara’s
stage. This kind of complicated and woven falsehood is her stage. Sound like
anyone?

Kara would totally
be a grifter. Especially a Kara who wasn’t found by Clark, who wasn’t found by
the Danvers—this is Kara without a purpose, who sees her cousin flying over
Metropolis with the house of El’s Crest on his chest and doesn’t need her. She has nothing to live for—so she wanders, constantly
pretending to be someone else and she gets good
at it. She has a soft spot for swindling people who violate environmental laws
because it’s easier—and never goes
after anyone who doesn’t deserve it. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily legal. She’s also got a soft spot for
art—it’s marvelous, in a way even Krypton never was. And grifting is something
that makes her feel alive, covering up for just a little bit the gaping hole in
her heart where Krypton used to be. And really, she doesn’t have very many
ties, or attachments—she travels light, easily able to switch identities and
leave at the drop of a hat. There’s this undercurrent of sadness in all of her
identities, even with the happiest of her personas—which just makes her a
mystery and all the more magnetic to the people she’s trying to con—she’s able
to seem so damn genuine and sincere it’s addicting.

Not to mention someone who can easily see everyone’s
tells because of advance senses, hear their heartbeat and see infinitesimal
twitches and expressions that pass in a millisecond—she didn’t visibly use her powers as Cat’s
assistant, but she still kept the job for 2 years before using super speed or
strength—and that was because of how well she could read Cat, who went
through probably hundreds of assistants before finding Kara. That would be essential for a grifter. Plus, we know
that she learned English in less than a week.
An entire language in just a handful of days—being able to learn regional
dialect and adopt accents and

She goes by so many aliases, trying to run away from the
memory of krypton. But her current alias? Kiera. Kiera Deveraux.

Kara woke up alone on Earth and saw her no longer baby
cousin with their family crest on his chest doing perfectly fine—he’s grown, he
doesn’t need her. How would he even know about Kara in the first place, or any
of it? Kara’s been doing this since she was 13, and now she’s probably 30
something, maybe 32. We’ve had Clark even say—Kryptonians age very slowly. She
still looks like she’s in her early 20’s. She doesn’t seem to age maybe that makes
her even more legendary but she likes to use make up to make her look older
because that truly fucks with people,
although she never goes after bad
people.

One thing that is truly different from Krypton, and not in a
bad
way, or a lesser way, is the way humans create art—she loves art. And it’s something that she bonds over with their thief.

As for who’s Nate, the alcoholic whose young son died
because of corporate greed, the mastermind who thinks of every contingency and
almost obsessively observes and
analyzes? Why, that’s none other than Cat Grant. Cat Grant

Anyway I hope Lex knows that in a couple hundred years when people hear the name Luthor they’re gonna think about all the innovations Lena helped bring into the world and that in the history books of tomorrow there will be a four page spread of all her good deeds with a small, barely noticed footnote that has a little known fact about the great alien advocate Lena Luthor’s brother, who was anti alien and even committed an act of terrorism against aliens.

I hope he knows her legacy will outshine his for centuries, despite his best efforts.

what??? alex is younger than winn???

karatam:

iamdelta-s:

Yeah she is! Episode 14 confirmed that Winn’s age is 31 because in it, Winn said he hadn’t seen his mom in 20 years, and Winn’s mom left after his dad was arrested, which is when Winn was 11. So 20+11 = 31. And Alex is 29 since she turned 28 last season. So Alex is canonically younger than Winn, and that will forever crack me up. 😀

Tori:

ALEX IS NOT THE PROTECTIVE OLDEST SIBLING. SHE IS THE BRATTY MIDDLE CHILD. OH MY GOD

Me: and Winn is the geeky older sibling who just doESN’T WANT ALEX TO TOUCH HIS COLLECTIBLE ACTION FIGURES!!!! DAAAADDDDD [aka J’onn] SHE’S TOUCHING THEM ON PURPOSE TO ANNOY ME [she is]

every time Kara hugs someone I remember two things: the fact that her life was indescribably changed when she lingered one last moment for a hug with her mother (because Clark was just seconds before her–if she didn’t stop she wouldn’t have ended up in the phantom zone. The course of Kara’s entire life was decided with a hug) and her conversation with the AI “Anything you would ask of Alura you can ask of me” “I’d ask for a hug.” Kara knows what it means for a hug to be the very last and just have you ever looked at how kara hugs? kara always hugs people with her entire body, wrapping her arms around them and pressing them as close as she dares without hurting them kara Loves hugs i love her so much

I may not need Superman to be a hero, but I will always need you

#This is the relationship that is always going to resonate for me as platonic or romantic because Alex is the only one who#sees ALL of Kara. James is probably the closest second (And i really hope they continue to develop that relationship its sweet)#Winn sees a fantasy he can’t have and Cat really only started to notice ‘Kara’ when Kara began to become Supergirl#So many people  in Kara’s life look at the cute slightly awkward assistant and they think that’s the whole of Kara#and Cat sees – or senses – that maybe Kara can *become* more – and she’s right#but Alex is the one who knows – and has complete unshakable faith – in what Kara’s *already* capable of#Alex is the one who isn’t surprised or afraid of Kara’s rage or her grief#(I dont think James is afraid of her either but he was definitely surprised)#because Kara keeps those things hidden from everyone but Alex#Alex is the one who Kara trusts to see all of her because she always has from the first time they went flying#to Alex crawling under the table because Kara was afraid of a popcorn maker#Alex made the mistake of wanting Kara to stay ‘normal’ because (imo)  she was terrified for Kara#because  when you love someone you want to protect them and as soon as Kara put  on that cape Alex had to have known#she was never going to be able to truly protect Kara again and so she stumbles and makes mistakes#but she has always *always* known Kara was a hero#these idiots im just so emotional about them dammit
(via @racethewind10)

I think I am going to adopt arc’s tag of Danvers Squared because its ambiguity suits my purposes. I interpreted Alex’s wanting Kara to stay ‘normal’ f for the same reason she joined the DEO because she desperately wanted Kara to remain safe As a DEO agent Alex has a front and centre view to the shit that Superman deals with on a DAILY basis but worse than that? She is privy to exactly what the goverment has or is preparing and working on to fight people like Kara. She WORKS for them and not -I think- because she believes in it (though she does understand the alien threat from the prison) but because if she understands and sees it all first hand then she is better equiped to protect Kara in the event they come for her. Alex’s being DEO serves multiple purposes: 1) maybe she can do the job and keep Kara away from danger 2) if the DEO ever turns on Kara she will be uniquely placed to try and protect Kara because she knows what they have It’s only once Hank reveals himself as J’onn another alien refugee who was hunted by the DEO does she probably start to fear that day a little less because now she knows that Kara might have another ally. (and fuck now I want that story. I want the story of when the DEO come for Kara and Alex gets to her first grabbing her hand and telling her they have to run. that the government is coming for her and they have to go.)  via ayrki

# oh my god yes # bonus if its a pre-series thing # like kara doesnt know alex is deo and still isnt using her powers and now she has to run # the plane crash never happened so the catalyst still isnt there yet tags by @randomthingsthatilike123

I won’t lie: totally pre-series.  I am thinking Kara is still in college and she has no idea what Alex really does for work, just that she is terribly busy.  Too busy to talk to anyone in the family.  She misses her but Alex is being awesome and the world needs her to do that.  And then, out of the blue, Alex is in her dark dorm room, turning the stereo up too loud and speaking so that only Kara can hear.  That she’s in danger, that they’re coming of her and they have to run.  They have to run as far away from everything they’ve ever known (again) to keep her safe.  And Kara has no idea what the hell is going on, and it’s been months since she even heard from Alex, but there’s one thing she does know: Alex will always protect her.

OMG THE TAGS!! HJKJAHHFJAHKAL THIS IS GETTING TOO BIG AND I LOVE IT
