you know what soulmate aus need?

more shitty consequences

@krebkrebkreb and I came up with some fun ones, feel free to steal them for your own usage

so basically, in this bullshit universe, skin to skin contact with your soulmate has real and lasting side-effects. While you’re touching, you can get bits and pieces of the other person’s thoughts and feelings, the connection growing stronger the longer the contact lasts. When touching during sleep, you can share dreams! The effect lingers for a few minutes after contact ends. It’s pretty cool, right?

well it is until you spend more than a month without skin contact with your soulmate. Then shit starts to suck for you. ‘Lovesickness’ as its called, has four distinct phases;

phase 1 (roughly a month without physical contact)

  • mild headaches
  • fatigue
  • heavy limbs
  • light sensitivity
  • ‘skin hunger’; general longing for skin-to-skin contact
  • commonly mistaken for hangovers/beginning of a flu

phase 2 (roughly a week following symptoms of phase 1)

  • muscle and joint aches, primarily in the hands
  • tingling/itching sensation, also primarily in the hands, especially the palms
  • pain when making fists/flexing or curling fingers
  • dry mouth

phase 3 (roughly two weeks following symtpoms of phase 2

  • tunnel vision
  • extreme hot/cold flashes
  • fainting
  • nausea/virtigo

phase 4 (roughly one week following symptoms of phase 3)

  • general return to normal, if usually depressed
  • overall numb feeling
  • emotional malaise
  • lingering skin hunger

If at any point, you and your soulmate do skin-to-skin contact, this physical hell will end. The more advanced the phase, the longer the contact is needed for symptoms to clear up. Phase 1 takes a few minutes, phase 3 can take up to an hour of prolonged contact. Phase 4 is dubeous and reports vary from couple to couple, because at that point, you’re technically starting the entire cycle over.

You won’t have to worry about any of this crap if you never make skin-contact with your soulmate. If you do, even for a fleeting second, and then go a month without repeated contact, you’re in for some bullshit. Obviously, for some people the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, but for others, its a fucking hastle that could fucking derail your entire life.

would just be awful if it happened to your OTP, wouldn’t it?

My favorite part of this is “even for a fleeting second.” The Missed Connections section of Craigslist would be full of “hey if you’re the guy that brushed my hand as we passed in the crosswalk at Franklin and Park last Friday and now you have a flu, either you have really potent germs or we’re soulmates.”

and then there’s that motherfucker in your school who is convinced, every goddamn time they get sick, that they’ve found their soulmate

like, no Gerald, your immune system just fucking sucks

Soulmates are not your ~other half~, that’s just nonsense. You are a whole person already, not half a person. A soulmate isn’t even inherently romantic. A soulmate is just the other sock in a matched set. You’re still a whole, complete sock on your own, you are perfectly functional paired with any other sock, it’s just that it’s even better when you match. A soulmate is literally just the person who makes your soul go “!!! Same hat!!!” and wave excitedly.

i love this

@jazzfordshire @nevertobeships … for some strange reason i thought of you two when i read this…

Okay guys hear me out.

A soulmate AU where you have a black stain where your soulmate is supposed to touch you for the first time and it turns to millions of colors once they do.

Like, so many people with their right palms all black, waiting for that one handshake.

People who have black knuckles who are scared for years that they end up punching their soulmate or something and end up coming home with their knuckles turned all shades of red and blue and purple without them noticing because sometimes your hands just brush together.

Someone having a very visible black palm on their cheek that they try to cover up because people will just know they will be slapped one day.

Just

consider the possibilities.

a handprint on your upper arm that bursts into colors during a fight you’re having with a close friend because you tried to walk away and they grabbed you–you never noticed that you never touched them until right now

twin handprints on your chest because your soulmate happens to be the paramedic who steps in to give you chest compressions that one time you almost died

a handprint on your palm but it’s not upside down like a handshake would be, you’re puzzled until you give someone a high five and the colors appear

someone you just met brushes a leaf off your shirt–RIGHT WHERE YOUR HANDPRINT IS YOU ALWAYS WONDERED WHY IT WAS ON YOUR PEC

I actually love this one a lot

We’re Holding On To Something That’s Invisible

majordetectiveagent:

A long awaited 7k sequel to the soulmark fic Holding On To Something I Haven’t Got. Same Linkin Park song inspired this title. I hope it lives up to expectations. Lemme know.

“But did you honestly try to find a way to reverse what was done to you? Or were you relieved you wouldn’t have to lie to anyone else or live up to their expectations?”

When Alex actually had a moment to herself to think, she really, truly, wanted to slam Kara into a wall. Of course, she tried to find a reversal. Of course, she wanted to have her soul mark healed. As much as Kara was right about Alex being relieved, that didn’t mean she wanted to miss out on the brief moment of that mythical euphoria. Even if Alex had ended up not liking her soulmates, at least she would know who they were.

Alex hadn’t been the only one affected by the Jatarian’s actions. Griff didn’t deserve what had happened to him. She had tried for months to find a fix for their situation. Between ops and labs and training, Alex had spent every free moment studying the tools used to harm them. She had combed through every bit of research, having learned an entirely new language. But the Fort Rozz escapee really hadn’t been interested in a way to reverse his damaging studies. All he wanted was to cause humans pain.

Now, Alex had to sit in her lab, with old reports opened on her desk and on her computers. The Jatarian’s tools were still in their sealed container, but now they were in sight for the first time in almost three years. She knew the flare of pain on her wrist was a phantom one. It still made her twitch.

Holding on to what I haven’t got

majordetectiveagent:

I’m sick, all congested and sore throat and while I’m lucky it isn’t strep that just means I have to old school heal from this without antibiotics. So. I had a fever dream in the form of this marvelous piece of angst.
Title from a Linkin Park song. Thanks to @bathtimefunduck for looking it over C:

Soulmate AU

~Everyone has distinct, faded tattoos on their wrists that would glow and get a little warm and send a shot of euphoria when their soulmate is met. Touching those marks together ends the reaction and adds color to the mark.~

Alex knows she hits puberty when she wakes up to a pale blue and light green whirligig on her wrist. She is both excited and confused. She has her mark, which she’s been waiting for since she was old enough for puberty. But she has a dual mark, meaning she’ll be part of a triad. Couples are common, and anything more is rare but mostly accepted. There are some people out there who think couples are the Only Right Way, but the majority of people agree that love shared is love multiplied.

Eliza tells her triads aren’t exactly rare in their family history, but it usually skips a generation. Jeremiah says he’s never heard of any triads in his family tree, but that doesn’t mean much. They take Alex out for ice cream sundaes to celebrate.

Alex wishes they had taken a picture of her shiny new soul mark, too.

Based on this prompt from @polyamoryprompts

  (part 1 on AO3)

Of all the days she has to return to National City, it had to be the day someone blew up a building.

She could have been back weeks ago and running towards it in tac gear instead of heels and a dress, but that was entirely her fault.

She had been scared to return, to see Alex dating Maggie, to learn exactly how it all worked out.

Was Alex her unrequited? Was Maggie her enemy? The woman Alex was really supposed to be with?

A small part of her had, correctly, called her coward, had said it didn’t have to be bad.

Lucy had ignored that small part and stayed away as long as she could.

The Green Before the Rainbow

poppyssupergirl:

This is for the beautiful and wonderful and kind and gloriously assed (confirmed) @thequeenofnationalcity   who was all “soulmate aus!!!” about 400 years ago and I went all “ermagerd, same!!!!” and then this happened and I forgot about it on my google drive, but lo and behold! I fuckin found it.

Anyway, thank you to @the-queen-of-the-light and @sterling-jay for the quick beta and verification that this is okay.

Tis v short and if you’d rather read it on AO3, Here is the link.

The first thing she sees on Earth is color. Green, to be specific. It’s everywhere, the world is awash in this gorgeous, gorgeous green.

Krypton had nothing like it. Krypton was grey and dying, but Earth is green, green, green.

Alex checks to make sure she blinks every now and then those first few weeks. “That’s the color of your soulmate’s eyes. There really wasn’t any green on Krypton?”

She doesn’t know. She shouldn’t have been color blind; she came out of a machine and no one else in her family ever was. Except for Kal, but she didn’t know that then.

No one did, and no one from Krypton ever would.

me: this whole concept of ~soulmates~ is so damaging, you can be happy with so many people throughout your life and sometimes the best you can do in a failed relationship is to let it go, that person isn’t THE ONE, no one is, everything in the media about romance is so fucked up on so many levels–
