I got to watch this with two guys from the real LGSM last year and Cliff was a real person. They didn’t invent him. There really was a kind old gay guy in the village who loved poetry and was loved by his community. Apparently the real Cliff wasn’t particularly closeted and was a bit more flamboyant but I appreciate what Bill did with the character here. I’m incredibly fond of Cliff and it was just the best thing ever to find out he was real.
