Supergirl’s Melissa Benoist: Season 4 Opts for Empowerment Over Romance
Supergirl‘s fourth season, which continues Sunday (The CW, 8/7c), reinforces the idea that “you can find empowerment in many different avenues of life,” star Melissa Benoist tells TVLine, confirming that there’s “not much” romance coming up for the Girl of Steel.
“It’s not that I don’t think there should be any,” she explains, “but I like seeing a woman fending for herself and not thinking about [romance]. If it falls into her lap, great.”
One relationship you can look forward to developing, however, is between Kara and Nia, the new cub reporter she’s mentoring at CatCo Worldwide Media. Though there’s still “some ice to break” between them, Benoist says that pairing will “pay off in really amazing ways.”
That said, it may take a while for Kara to suspect that there’s more to her new mentee than meets the eye. (Specifically, that she’ll eventually suit up as superhero Dreamer.) “What she sees initially is a really smart, capable, intelligent woman with great ideas,” Benoist says. “She just wants to harbor that and help it grow the way Cat Grant did for her.”
And then there’s the “other” Kara, first introduced at the end of the show’s third season finale. Referring to her as “Red Daughter,” Benoist says, “I haven’t really gotten to know her yet fully,” but confirms, “I have spoken some Russian” in the role.
So from the promo, Kal-El is on Argo this season. And I’m just imagining that landing scene. The lost child, hero of Earth, son of Jor-El who told them the planet was dying and who with the help of Zor-El is the only reason they’re alive. And Kara has told everyone about what a good and kind man he grew to be, so everyone shows up to welcome him home. Assembled in their finery, a grand occasion full of Kryptonian pageantry. And then he opens his mouth and they hear his accent,,,
i mean i know you’re intending to make this funny but speaking as someone who absolutely should know a language and have that accent down pat and is their heritage and is horrible at it–it’s really not that funny
and it’s even worse for Clark, because these are the people who are supposed to be his family, the people he was supposed to grow up with and they’re just so alien to him–kara downplays a lot of it since she was told constantly to fit in, and he didnt see her that much but now he’s with his own people and he’s standing out like a sore thumb–his accent, his manner, how he holds himself, idioms that he just doesnt get, references that go over his head, he’s supposed to belong and he doesn’t, and we see in Myriad that Clark thinks like a human
these are supposed to be his people, and even among them he’s an outsider. and it’s another way that kara and clark are alike because at this point–kara’s not really fully one of them either. she’s gone through too much, experienced things that none of them ever had to, not even close–she was the last, more so than even clark, she had to live with feeling like she failed her parents, with being an orphan and growing up in a strange and foreign planet and all that entailed, had to constantly hide and protect
they’re good and kind and wonderful but they don’t belong. not really. not really anywhere tbh–but that’s what it means to be a child of two worlds
have you considered that Kara was really into music as a child because well, she couldn’t exactly be into sports with her powers, after all, and she is the only one with knowledge of Kryptonian music. If she doesn’t learn to play it herself, then she will never hear it again. And the instruments aren’t quite the same, but they’re similar enough that when she plays for a moment she can fool herself into believing that her parents would just be right there when she looked up
Okay, I like your thought. (I meant it when I was stalking your blog tags and that you have awesome thoughts)
Have you also considered that it is through music, through playing music, that Kara being to gain and later hones her control? Music is sound but it’s also touch. It’s vibration and force and knowing exactly what pressure or exhale is required to strike the note right. It’s in knowing how much to manipulate or adjust that resulting sound to produce something even greater.
Kara is awkward and anxious, but she’s not a klutz. She’s managed -in ten years- to go from suddenly having super-strength, speed, and senses to having pretty damned good control of them. While growing, while experiencing this new, alien world around her. And while, you know, dealing with the grief of losing everything she’s ever known including her remaining purpose in life.
Headcanon: if Kara learns and/or teaches herself music, this is one of the ways she finds to hone her control and mastery over her abilities on the finer end of the scale. This still leaves the upper spectrum as relatively inexperienced, which works into canon. (And @mysteriousangstninja, this would totally work in with one of those ideas we’ve been talking about.)
Which then leads me to the inevitable: Kara’s got a lot of nervous actions, we already know that, but add that with an inclination towards music, towards touch and rhythm and the soothing pattern edged out with finger tips? Kara’s always going to be hesitant with her strength, but one thing she learned from music was how to touch lightly. It tends to be lost on most, who think it’s insignificant from how faint it is. It’s barely there and everyone is too busy to really pay attention. But imagine someone who isn’t. Someone who stops and takes the time and realises that Kara’s got an unfathomable gentleness about her touch. She can make instruments sing, can draw the most exquisite of hums from string and marvels at each percussive vibration. Drums and strings and woodwinds are all amazing, but its humans who make Kara light up with delight.
Of course, now I think I want a musician AU, but I’m pretty sure I’d be happy in seeing any form of musical!Kara played out.
# oh my god i love this so much # like there is also a kind of safety in fame too # because it is so much harder to disappear a famous person than it is an anonymous one # one who is beloved by the public and would have more than one person fight for them # like alex would worry both more and less because there are so many people watching kara # that can easily see her lose control but at the same time so many people watching her means alex can relax just a littel bit more # because kara being america’s sweetheart kind of thing # and music is something that kara doesnt have to feel guilty about using her powers for # or thinking it gives her an unfair advt compared to like maybe an athlete or something because the part of music it is for other people # and i’m just assuming here kara is at least somewhat famous # like has a p specific following

When Kara has a particularly bad night she likes to play with kitties. By now, the zoo keepers at National City Zoo don’t bat an eye when they come in in the morning and find her sleeping in a big pile with the Mountain Loins, who love her because she’s so warm. It drives J’onn nuts. Alex just laughs. Cat pays the staff for pictures and keeps an album, but never publishes them.
