Imagine how many people thought Lena Luthor was a workaholic when the truth was that she had no friends
Actually let me rephrase
Imagine how many times Lena lied and said she was a workaholic when coworkers or assistants said she needed to spend time outside of work when the truth was that she had no friends
And then imagine Lena going out somewhere with Kara one day and seeing old co-workers or employees and they’re just completely shocked to see Lena out of the office so they decide to talk to her like ‘hey, finally decided to take a break, I see’ and Kara’s confused because she and Lena go out all the time and she says as much and then the others are confused because ‘no, sweetie, she’s a workaholic; never leaves the office unless it’s to sleep’.
Imagine Lena slowly trying to disappear and failing horribly because both Kara and the other people want to know what’s going on; Kara wanting to know why she never used to go out and the others wanting to know why she’s suddenly out all the time so she lies her way out of it; she made herself a deal that she needed to stop working so much because it wasn’t good for her and everyone accepts it but Kara but she doesn’t say anything until later.
Imagine Kara pulling Lena aside same time later in the night and asking why she lied and Lena refusing to meet her eyes and fiddling with whatever’s in her hands and promising to tell Kara everything over ice cream another time and Kara holding her to that.
Imagine them both being at Kara’s, all curled up on the sofa and then Kara decided to bring it up again and Lena quietly admits that the reason she never used to go out was because she never had anyone to go out with.
Imagine Kara’s heart breaking for Lena and pulling her into a hug that Lena’s surprised to receive because ‘honestly Kara, I’m fine; it’s no big deal’ but she lets Kara hug her because she’s enjoying it too much to let go.
Imagine Lena being invited on a night out by Kara to the alien bar and being surprised when they meet up with the rest of the gang and being wary at first but winds up having the time of her life. Winn talks to her about technology, Alex joins in shortly after. Maggie is just as terrible at pool as she is and they bond over making references to lesbians in TV shows. James is quick to jump to her defence when a random alien tries to hit on her and Kara is too buys handling something else to rescue her and J’onn is like the father she never had, cutting her off when she’d had too much to drink and glaring at anyone who looks at her in a way he doesn’t like.
Imagine Lena asking Kara why she’s done this and Kara quietly admitting that she felt bad that Lena hadn’t had any friends and that she wanted to share hers and Lena being so touched by it she almost cries.
Imagine them all tripping back to Kara’s that night and just collapsing on random surfaces to sleep and imagine Lena waking up in the morning wrapped around Kara and looking around to see an apartment full of friends and imagine how she finally feels like she belongs.
do you ever think about the billions of Kryptonians who died when Krypton exploded, completely blindsided, never even knowing that this was a possibility. only kara and kal-el getting out in time, astra, a general being sentenced to the phantom zone, where some of the worst criminals in the galaxy are sent since krypton doesn’t have a death penalty, for trying to get the information out there and not complying with the counsel’s orders to be passive, to just let it happen.
Almost no one knew that Krypton was about to die. Hell who knows for how long Kara knew, or if she was even told at all before they sent her in that pod. Kara would have wanted to tell everyone and well–look at what they did to Astra.
Lmao “kryptonians can be arrogant” trust me i think kara learned that
lesson long ago, while she watched everything and everyone she ever
cared about go up in a swirling ball of flames (and if she didn’t know
as a child? she now has alura’s hologram. “why am i the only survivor,
besides kal-el” is something she has definitely wondered)
Kara is someone who watched a world die because politicians decided to play god, to decide exactly what her people could and couldn’t know about their own livelihood. Do you ever think about in that context, Kara wanting to be a reporter–someone who serves the public, someone who reveals secrets powerful people do not want the world to know–and remember that Kara has very different reasons than her cousin for following that career path?
yes to all of that. to all of karas pain, and give me the plot where kara really comes to understand why she wanted to become a reporter in the first place. give me kara the reporter seeing a small story and chasing it and chasing it until all of a sudden she’s face to face with exactly the kind of story powerful people do not want told and give me kara having this full realization as she’s face to face with the complexities of the story she’s got in her hands.
and give me kara challenged – not just by the powerful people who do not want this story told, but challenged morally. give me a storyline that is focused on kara the reporter understanding that with great power (in this case her voice, her way with words, her platform within catco) comes great responsibility. and how thats not a lesson she thought she wouldn’t have to learn again, not after learning to control literal superhuman powers.
and god, i honestly just want a plot where kara gets to acknowledge her trauma and the effects that it has on her. i want kara to be able to talk about her pain and her past and her every day struggle to be good. i want, in aforementioned big plot, i want kara to face her anger and see her anger can be dangerous, but it can also be her strength. a lesson she sees learned before, and not one she thought she would have to learn again.
and honestly in this context? kara going around snapper and publishing her story makes sense. “there is a story that people need to know about for their own safety. and i’m being blocked.” like. of course she’s going to go rogue, better for her to make a mistake and be wrong than for innocents to die.
(and even more ironic? Going around her superior, doing exactly what she thinks is right, getting fired from her job?
“And you think we should encourage the chaos by letting the heathen behind the wheel?”
“Come on, Cat, we talked about this. He’s sixteen, he doesn’t want us to drive him everywhere. It’s not cool.” Kara is very invested in cool, maybe it’s because she still only has a permit, and her driving encourages no confidence.
“Until I see that poor driving isn’t genetic,” Cat grouses, and presses a kiss to Carter’s forehead, and another to Kara’s cheek, “He’s not getting anywhere near Stella. He can drive Chuck.”
You can’t help frowning, because Chuck is your grandfather’s 1987 VW station wagon, a boat sized vehicle that is somehow still driving a thousand and a half years later. You’d much rather drive Stella, Cat’s brand new Mercedes lease.
“What?” You groan, “That car’s older than I am.”
Cat pats your cheek while she walks by, “I have shoes older than you are.”
Honestly as much as I hate what happened to Supergirl as a show last season (with the exception of alex and maggie and james and m’gann) Kara Zor El is still one of my favorite characters. Not Kara right now, but Kara at her heart, season one Kara. The Kara who talks first and punches later. The Kara who, devoid of powers, faces a robber with a loaded gun and talks him down because even if she can’t punch she can’t do nothing.
The Kara who has so much love and hope in her heart despite how much she’s lost.
If you love Supergirl check out @plastic-pipes ‘s art, it waters my crops and clears my skin, this piece especially, I keep staring at it, and it’s the one who made me want to draw some supergirl in the first place, thank you for blessing us with it ❤
