HELLO I am going to need everyone to pre-order this asap. I finished it yesterday, in advance of talking to @brittalundin for next week’s Fansplaining, and it is SO GOOD I CANNOT.
Notable highlights include:
- The most clear and accessible breakdown of fan/creator interaction I’ve ever read (specifically about a TV show and its predominantly female audience; obviously there many kinds of fans and many kinds of creators)
- A beautifully drawn and really nuanced group of characters
- A VERY charming teen f/f romance (Teens. Are. So. Awkward.)
- A++ mom character, she is a DELIGHT
- Real variation in fans’ perspectives on fandom/how it relates to creators/canon, something that I don’t think I’ve seen much of in fandom YA novels, which usually hug closely to the protagonist’s view
I’m literally going to press this book on every single person who works in the entertainment industry—including those who write about it—but this is also a novel about fandom by someone who’s been in fandom for a very long time.
So quick!!! Pre-order it!!! Or request that your local library order a copy!!! (And if you don’t have a specific local bookstore to support, can I recommend this wonderful list of queer indie bookstores with online shops!)
After you’ve pre-ordered the book, you should listen to our first conversation with Britta, from last year, to prep for next week’s episode!

Kara’s obsession w food also makes a lot if sense when u remember that for kara, until she became supergirl there really wasn’t much physical activity she could do that gave her endorphins bc she wasn’t using her powers and just normal everyday activity does nothing for her like is there anything other than sex and food that would do much? I am not an expert on the subject so idk but when you have Massive PTSD and need stress relief and physical activity doesn’t work and all your other senses are constantly dialed up to a bajillion it makes sense Kara loves food
in this house we love and respect Kara Danvers with all our hearts and desperately want her to go to therapy
Fellow storytellers, lend me your ear!
Listen, you ever have the problem where you’ve got a biological conundrum where someone’s got a mutation, or superpowers, or the dog is an alien, but you’re wondering how you can make it plausible that vets, doctors, scientists just MISSED this little bit of information during lab tests?
I present to you:
Dark DNA <–[ psst, link to youtube video about it. Or, like, just google it ]
It’s like dark matter, but in your DNA!
It goes like this:
Genetic sequences do things like tell your body how/when to produce insulin (or the proteins responsible for superpowers).
But the genome of the mice being studied were MISSING the sequences that do that, despite the fact that they were OBVIOUSLY producing insulin since the mice weren’t dead, even if the genome didn’t actually explain HOW they were doing that.
Scientists DID eventually deduce where they’re pretty sure the missing
sequences are, but literally only knew to go looking because they knew
there was something to look for in the first place.So. When pseudo-science fails to explain how
superpowers/mutations/supernatural markers could go undetected, fall

Intimacy is beyond kisses and cuddles and sex. Intimacy is getting a headache and taking a nap, and waking up to your laundry folded and your partner rubbing your back. Intimacy is crying and yelling at night about your past to someone who listens and comforts you. Intimacy is watching shows in your pjs for hours and eating pizza together and being able to communicate love through holding hands. It’s never running out of conversation but doing it anyways to enjoy silence.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Intimacy was defined by my health teacher as: Being able to feel vulnerable with someone while still feeling safe.
intimacy, according to my professor of philosophy, is to be able to say “I do not know” without fear of being judged.
– I remember thinking I would never feel at home on Earth. I still don’t, in a way. But I feel at home with you.
– Always.
