Friendly Fire Part 2: Just Breathe
Lucy wasn’t entirely sure how she made it back to the city. She’d been in a meeting and missed the panicked call from that teacher Maggie was supposed to spend the day doing talks for. She’d been in a meeting, listening to draft dodging generals groan on and on about budgets and classification levels and women in the military while Maggie was trapped in a school with no protective gear and some coward bottom feeder that somehow survived the Police Academy.
She was in some useless meeting with her phone on silent while Maggie was saving kids.

you know the standard operating procedures backup your decision, but alex was still hurt, still may be dying – and there are no guidelines to make you feel better about that.
[or: lucy is faced with an impossible choice and has to deal with the repercussions]
”take the shot.”
that’s alex’s voice in your ear. you hear the urgency, the panic.
”director,” that’s agent bird’s voice “he’s dialing. this is the only chance we’re gonna have.”
you know the sniper is right.
”tell him to take the shot, luce.” alex’s composure is slipping, you can hear it. you can almost see it on the grainy cctv footage winn pulled up of the warehouse ”do it.”alex is saying, and her voice is more urgent now ”you have to tell him to do it.”
you know she’s right.
you know hundreds of lives are hanging in the balance.
”it’s okay luce.” that’s alex’s voice, soft and understanding – despite it all ”you have to do this.”
“i’m sorry.”
those are your own words.
your last words to alex.
“take the shot.”
barely have the words left your lips when there’s an echoing crack and on the screens spread in front of you,
the perp falls.
alex falls.
a door behind you flies open “lucy, what the hell did you do?”
that’s kara’s voice.
It seems a lot of prompts in the Director Sanvers world focus on Alex or Lucy. I’d love to see Maggie getting fairly injured (at work), and the fall out. I guess I’m imagining something a little longer than a single part prompt.
Maggie loved community outreach. Granted, she usually worked within the confines of alien outreach, but today she had the chance to reach kids before they became bigoted assholes like her parents. It was a career day of sorts, a favor for an ex’s current girlfriend, a science teacher at T.H. Maiman High. Come in, talk about the Science Division and how they (admittedly mostly just Maggie) were working to be better than the cops the kids saw on tv.
I may not need Superman to be a hero, but I will always need you.
#This is the relationship that is always going to resonate for me as platonic or romantic because Alex is the only one who#sees ALL of Kara. James is probably the closest second (And i really hope they continue to develop that relationship its sweet)#Winn sees a fantasy he can’t have and Cat really only started to notice ‘Kara’ when Kara began to become Supergirl#So many people in Kara’s life look at the cute slightly awkward assistant and they think that’s the whole of Kara#and Cat sees – or senses – that maybe Kara can *become* more – and she’s right#but Alex is the one who knows – and has complete unshakable faith – in what Kara’s *already* capable of#Alex is the one who isn’t surprised or afraid of Kara’s rage or her grief#(I dont think James is afraid of her either but he was definitely surprised)#because Kara keeps those things hidden from everyone but Alex#Alex is the one who Kara trusts to see all of her because she always has from the first time they went flying#to Alex crawling under the table because Kara was afraid of a popcorn maker#Alex made the mistake of wanting Kara to stay ‘normal’ because (imo) she was terrified for Kara#because when you love someone you want to protect them and as soon as Kara put on that cape Alex had to have known#she was never going to be able to truly protect Kara again and so she stumbles and makes mistakes#but she has always *always* known Kara was a hero#these idiots im just so emotional about them dammit
(via @racethewind10)I think I am going to adopt arc’s tag of Danvers Squared because its ambiguity suits my purposes. I interpreted Alex’s wanting Kara to stay ‘normal’ f for the same reason she joined the DEO because she desperately wanted Kara to remain safe As a DEO agent Alex has a front and centre view to the shit that Superman deals with on a DAILY basis but worse than that? She is privy to exactly what the goverment has or is preparing and working on to fight people like Kara. She WORKS for them and not -I think- because she believes in it (though she does understand the alien threat from the prison) but because if she understands and sees it all first hand then she is better equiped to protect Kara in the event they come for her. Alex’s being DEO serves multiple purposes: 1) maybe she can do the job and keep Kara away from danger 2) if the DEO ever turns on Kara she will be uniquely placed to try and protect Kara because she knows what they have It’s only once Hank reveals himself as J’onn another alien refugee who was hunted by the DEO does she probably start to fear that day a little less because now she knows that Kara might have another ally. (and fuck now I want that story. I want the story of when the DEO come for Kara and Alex gets to her first grabbing her hand and telling her they have to run. that the government is coming for her and they have to go.) via ayrki
# oh my god yes # bonus if its a pre-series thing # like kara doesnt know alex is deo and still isnt using her powers and now she has to run # the plane crash never happened so the catalyst still isnt there yet tags by @randomthingsthatilike123
I won’t lie: totally pre-series. I am thinking Kara is still in college and she has no idea what Alex really does for work, just that she is terribly busy. Too busy to talk to anyone in the family. She misses her but Alex is being awesome and the world needs her to do that. And then, out of the blue, Alex is in her dark dorm room, turning the stereo up too loud and speaking so that only Kara can hear. That she’s in danger, that they’re coming of her and they have to run. They have to run as far away from everything they’ve ever known (again) to keep her safe. And Kara has no idea what the hell is going on, and it’s been months since she even heard from Alex, but there’s one thing she does know: Alex will always protect her.

the wealth of dragons – Alex/Kara ficlet
A
little Danvers Sisters ficlet inspired by the post about a dragon trying to
sleep on it’s friends and family ever night because they’re it’s greatest
treasure.—
the wealth of dragons
—Kara
nudges the window open with her muzzle and carefully peeks inside to confirm Alex
definitely still asleep.The
lump in Alex’s bed doesn’t move and she huffs her small victory, before
scooting further in, one claw on the ottoman, then the next on the hardwood
floor with barely a sound, and keeps her wings tucks tight to her back as she
slips fully into her sister’s apartment, absently bumping the window closed
with her tail.Alex’s
fan covers the sound of her claws sneaking very
gingerly across the floor and up the small platform to the bed.Now
it’s time for the difficult part. She
tucks her body low and scoots herself up alongside the bed, ears perked for any
sound that her presence might’ve been detected, before slowly lighting her
head, neck craned to peek over the edge.Alex
hasn’t moved, laying on her side, facing away from her, her breath even, the
curved outline of her shoulder, waist, and hip remain still in the slants of
moonlight.It’s
only years of practice that have given Kara the ability to climb up onto the mattress
so delicately, not even Alex “aggravatingly-light-sleeper” Danvers is
disturbed by it.Admittedly,
this had been easier when her dragon form was more or less Doberman-sized, as
opposed to the decidedly lion size she is nowadays. But she makes due, and has
learned how to work around her own bulk. The
fan hums and Alex sleeps, and Kara places each step with the utmost care and precision,
eyes locked on the profile of Alex’s face the entire time. She
moves as close as she can without touching Alex, then shifts her fore-claw
across Alex’s body, coming to rest just below Alex’s pillow, then her back leg
follows, nearly coming down on Alex’s knee before Kara realizes she’d
miscalculated which fold of the blanket was which, and she freezes, one leg
hanging in the air, claw clenched tight. She
turns frightful eyes down at Alex’s face, heart pounding, waiting for those
hazel eyes to open and catch her red-clawed.Alex
hums, face scrunching, the fingers near her face twitching. She sniffs and
nuzzles into her pillow, before sighing and drifting back from the edge of
waking.Kara
lets out a silent breath, muscles unbunching, and takes excruciating caution as
she finally settles her foot down below Alex’s bent knees. Now
straddling Alex’s sleeping form, she adjusts her footing a bit, makes sure
everything comfortable and in place, and then slowly lowers herself down,
holding all of her weight on her bent legs as the sleek scales down her belly
brush Alex’s side, before easing her weight down. Most
of her weight comes to final rest on her legs on either side of Alex’s body, but
she sighs happily at the uniquely perfect sensation of having her sister safely
tucked beneath her.She
indulges herself the tiniest lick against Alex’s cheek before laying her head
down over Alex’s, lapsing over onto the pillow-space above the mop of dark
hair, tail curling over Alex’s feet, and finally closes her eyes, chest humming
with peace and security, never happier than she is just like this. Then
Alex shifts and Kara freezes, eyes flying open, waiting on baited breath.Alex
grunts and moves her head so her ear is no longer quite as trapped under Kara’s
jaw, and slips her hand around the firm muscle of Kara’s upper-foreleg,
absently stroking the sensitive scales with her thumb.“I’m
still not going to the farmers’ market with you,” she mumbles through a
yawn and squirms to get comfortable, slipping her other hand under Kara’s claw,
palm-to-palm.Kara
smiles and lifts her head to huff down against Alex’s temple, giving her
another lick, which Alex half-heartedly protests with a whine, but leans into
the affection before Kara settles back down, tucking Alex more securely beneath
her, and closes her eyes with a happy sigh.Alex
is objectively the greatest treasure in the universe and she’s all Kara’s.How
did Kara get so lucky?—

I utterly adore this concept and have literally been thinking about this for months. So I finally decided to write the thing. And I dunno about you, but I love it.
I do hope you did too, though, and would love it if you let me know, via comments, asks, tags, or just liking and/or reblogging, really.
Anyway, thanks for reading!
could you do “you can trust me” for director sanvers from the four word prompts
tw: alcoholism, brief suicidal ideation
i don’t know what you guys expected from me, but here y’all go. some angst.
you are cold.
the night is dark and clear. stars hang in the sky, frozen by distance and there is no moon to speak of. shadows are deep now, darker, infinite if you look at them too hard. too closely. for too long.
you stare.
you are unblinking for what feels like hours.
a bottle in your hand, you sit, curled on the edge of your balcony staring across a cityscape, a city that even in these midnight hours, still has a pulse.
the sleep beast, waiting to be awoken by the rising sun.
like you,
a sleeping beast that awoke, that reared it’s head inside of you, overwhelmed you.
this need.
this urge.
this desire.
this unending, unrelenting torment that whispers in your ear until you’re not strong enough to ignore it any more.
you take another pull from the bottle.
the whiskey burns your throat and tears spring to your eyes.
the two are unrelated, occurring in the same moment by chance. the burn from the drink feels good. the sting in your eyes from the tears, does not.
you set the bottle down, pushing it out of arms reach with a foot. it catches on the edge of the door frame and before you can stop or even react, the bottle tips. its precious contents spilling across the floor.
city lights glitter in the spreading pool.
you stare, arms wrapped around your knees, chin pressing against the space between your knee caps.
you close your eyes.
the wind is cold against you, but the chill feels good. it feels like punishment.
Director Sanvers “Sorry, were you sleeping?” please :-)

it’s a knock on the door that wakes lucy. the knock is soft, it’s gentle, the person on the other side of the door seems aware of just how exhausted lucy is likely to be at this hour.
“come in.” lucy says, her voice hoarse and thick with sleep.
she sits up, a paper from lucy’s most recent report sticks to her cheek and lucy only just manages to pull it off before the door is swinging open. into lucy’s office steps maggie, who’s got a blanket folded over one arm, and a what looks like a bag of food in the other. maggie takes a glance at kara, who’s fast asleep on lucy’s couch, and then,
“sorry,” she says quietly, taking a look at lucy as she walks over “were you sleeping?”
“was it that obvious?” lucy asks, and she’s standing, seeking the comfort of maggie’s embrace “i didn’t even realise i fell asleep.”
maggie smooths lucy’s hair “i’m not surprised.” she says, her voice a low whisper “it’s nearly four in the morning.”
“shit.” lucy says quietly “i- they wouldn’t let me in alex’s room.”
Honestly remember season 1 and Maxwell Lord was taken into the DEO without due process and that’s when James was like hey maybe the DEO actually isn’t good. At all. And he was right but at the time he was only talking about humans at the time, and how they were treating humans. But what if this led his season 2 arc, with him as the head of this massive media company was James realizing that the DEO is actually alien Guantanamo.
These aliens had at minimum 24 years of being locked up, since that was how long Kara was in The Phantom Zone. We have no idea how long they were sentenced there for, or even for what. And what we know is that the DEO would then capture the alien, take them in, and decide whether or not they will be locked up forever and probably horrible confinement with no sunlight, or cell mates, or any chance of parole. Just look at that tiny cell Astra had. There is no parole, they are there forever without any kind of due process or rights, with agents possibly also conducting experiments on them, like they did with Astra and Kryptonite. They literally tortured Astra–and have you ever seen an alien prisoner with a lawyer? I haven’t.
Jonn had to pretend to be Hank for over a decade–Hank, who clearly had a bunch of friends in the military as we see in that ep where Alex is interrogated by Lucy in s1. You can’t all of a sudden be an alien lover and have extremely Progressive views. Maybe he can gradually and arbitrarily make changes, like letting go of the professor of astronomy that we see, who Hank probably would have kept imprisoned, or doing his best to recruit people who aren’t all hardcore xenophobes. But it’s not enough.
The DEO literally play judge, jury, and executioner with alien lives.
am not exaggerating when I say this is alien Guantanamo
and James realizing this, especially realizing this when he remembers that they shot Kara out of the sky with Kryptonite and locked her up before letting her go. It’s almost a survival thing for Kara to work with them, because this could be her. And it’s one thing when it is all the Fort Rozz aliens trying to kill her, but what about all the other aliens in national city?
And do you know who’s also end up being on his side? Someone he talks to
as a point to be like yes this is the alternative we need, James isn’t
just going to be like “this is wrong,” oh no, he’s going to have a
solution and ideas of how to make the system better, an alternate especially since right now it seems like for any crime aliens get life sentences.
Who this would bring him into contact with? Detective Maggie Sawyer
from National City Police Department’s science branch. And oh look. Now
we also have a cohesive storyline for Maggie that exists outside of
Alex. And that’s definitely one way to cause conflict between James and Kara, temporarily breaking them up. Because yes Alex definitely took the job in case they ever came after Kara–she straight out says multiple times she did this to protect Kara, because as she was before she couldn’t take on the DEO, and this would give her hours, maybe days of warning that she might need to grab Kara and run– but it was also a Lifeline when she was struggling. and there’s also a fact that most of the aliens Alex encounters wouldn’t hesitate to try and kill Aluras daughter if they knew about her, and she says in season one that J’onn told her that they were going to save the world. She then makes a point that she can’t distinguish between aliens and humans anymore, but we don’t really see that in DEO policies, other than they’ll now take in humans with powers as well as aliens. To do what she does, Alex needs to believe that she’s in the right– and tbh it kind of reminds me about border patrol dynamics w their family members(when I went to El Paso,TX–and this is from both undocumented immigrants and the border patrol themselves–they mentioned that several border patrol agents would have family members who were there illegally and it’s just the dynamic they live with it’s definitely an interesting but complicated topic).
This entire media war would definitely place James at odds with Alex. And even if Kara understands (even if it’s a truth Kara doesn’t want to acknowledge because so much of her life is hard and complicated and she doesn’t want to think about how tenuous her freedom really is, and what she’s maybe done for the past year), both Kara and Alex choose each other first, always. It’s not a man (or racism) who breaks up Kara and James. And James understands, he does, and he hopes that one day maybe Kara will stop being scared of what could happen (and if she is, its because hes helped shape a world where she wont be)–but it’s not going to stop him.
This is what’s right. This isn’t bs contrived drama–god, the metaphor and symbolism alone, about a black man being in control of the media narrative of the xenophobic practices of shady government law enforcement that do what they want to a vulnerable minority population, shaping public opinion, acting as the moral compass of the show? Mindblowing
This is how James Olsen can end up being a guardian for others. Not with his fists, or against muggers. Because
this is something he can do that Kara can’t. Kara may be a reporter, can go against a thousand corrupt politicians and institutions potentially–but not the DEO. She can’t do this–as an
alien, she’s under their purview. But James, as a civilian and a human,
isn’t. Kara Danvers may be somewhat of a big name for a few select
journalism circles by being Cat’s assistant for 3 years but that’s a
selective circle (and how many nights do you think Kara stays up late,
trying to avoid thinking about what scenario would make the DEO come
after her, or how many times they almost did, how much
information they collected on her, before she ever became Supergirl)
James said it himself–he took that picture, and now everyone
knows his name. This is not about punches and fighting–this is how
James can frame the narrative to shape public opinion and make change on a global scale. He’s not some
random reporter the DEO can disappear, or intimidate into compliance. He just became the head of an international media company, and he’s publicly known as Superman’s best friend–this has nothing to do with Superman, but he, with all his fragile humanity, has been threatened and intimidated by every single goddamn villain Superman has gone against and came out the other side breathing. Sure he’s scared, but when has that ever stopped him? He’s James fucking Olsen, and he’ll hold his head high as he does what’s right.

Established Maggie/Lucy with Alex crushing hardcore
Parkour au?
Grad school au?
Something like that
Alex slid into the booth, setting the pizza and tray of buffalo wings down as she did so. She had barely settled before a phone was thrust in her face. She stared at the picture of Maggie for a moment before looking up at Lucy with a raised eyebrow.
“That is a great lockscreen, but I do know what Maggie looks like.”
Lucy rolled her eyes as she pulled the phone back. She unlocked it, then thrust it back at Alex.
An unplayed YouTube video.
A familiar unplayed YouTube video.
She looked at Lucy again, schooling her face into confusion.
“Just watch it,” Lucy sighed. “Maggie and I found it last night.”
Alex glanced between the two, ignoring the way her chest always tightened around them, then played the video.
She watched as a person wearing a GoPro followed another as they ran across the roofs, jumping and rolling and vaulting.
Her and Kara.
“I want to do parkour,” Lucy announced through a bite of wing.
Alex glanced over the phone to see Maggie rolling her eyes.
“You are not doing parkour,” Maggie said.
“And who are you to stop me?”
“Your girlfriend.” Maggie took a sip of her beer. “Really though, it’s dangerous.”
Alex looked back at the phone to see the person do a wall pass before moving into a jump and landing on the edge of the skyscraper.
“Not to mention,” Maggie continued. “Trespassing in places.”
Lucy scoffed.
“Really,” Maggie pushed. She pointed at the phone. “Those two? They cross the L-Corp building constantly.”
“Well, Ms. Security Guard, what are you going to do about it?” Lucy asked.
The video ended. Alex passed the phone back.
“Maggie’s right,” she said, pulling a slice of pizza from the pie. “That’s dangerous as fuck.”
Lucy pouted. “That’s rude, you two aren’t supposed to team up against me.”
Maggie pressed a kiss to her cheek. “Get used to it, babe.”
“Oh, is Alex finally joining us for some fun?”
Heat rose up Alex’s cheeks even as it settled low in her stomach.
Maggie shoved Lucy lightly. “Leave her alone.”
Alex ducked her head, hoping to hide any disappointment.
“Anyway,” Lucy said. She pulled the phone towards her and put on another video before shoving it back towards Alex. “This channel is great. They’ve got all of these videos of their runs and a linked Instagram account with pictures.”
“Do you know who they are?” Alex asked.
Lucy shook her head.
“They always have those masks on,” Maggie answered. “Probably because they know it’s illegal.”
“Parkour itself isn’t illegal,” Alex absently replied, watching the new video – a simple run, the traceur not wearing the GoPro was wearing a bi flag t-shirt.
“You big on parkour, Danvers?” Maggie asked, tilting her head to the side.
Alex looked up from the video, eyes wide.
“Not…not really. The gym I go to has a parkour area…thing.”
Lucy grinned. “Really? So, could you help us figure out who these two are?”
“Why would I do that?”
“Cause I want to meet them?”
Alex rolled her eyes. “I don’t really do anything with any of that, sorry.”
Lucy huffed.
Alex glanced at the time in the corner of the phone screen.
“Crap, I gotta get to lab hours,” she said, shoving the textbooks piled at the other end of the table into her bag. “I’ll see you two later?”
“Of course.”
Alex glanced back when she reached the door.
Maggie was holding some of Lucy’s hair back as she kissed the side of her head.
Alex let out a small breath. Longing filled her chest before she pushed out of the restaurant.
–
“Can you hold it for another moment?”
Alex rolled her eyes. “Yes, Kara, I can hold for another moment.”
She stared at the bar a few feet below her. She focused on her breathing, on keeping her body still. She tried to not pay attention to the blood rushing to her head in her upside down position.
“And, done.”
At Kara’s words, Alex untwisted her body, then dropped off of the ledge she had been posing on to the roof a few feet below. She rolled into the landing, but let the momentum go, falling back onto the roof.
She stared up at the sky, at the clouds floating past, at Kara floating down, scrolling through the pictures she had taken. Alex pushed herself up as Kara floating right to a seated position.
“I like this one,” Kara said, passing the GoPro over.
Alex pulled her mask down to hang from her neck.
The picture was good, capturing the strength and control she was using thanks to her sleeveless shirt. Her hair fell in front of her face, leaving just the rainbow mask visible. The city and ocean and dawn sky framed her.
“It’s good,” she said. “Post it.”
She passed the GoPro back, looking towards the city. She scooted closer to the edge of the roof, letting her legs hang down. She stared out, at the ocean meeting the sky.
“Maggie and Lucy found the channel,” she said.
“Really?” Kara asked, scooting up next to her.
Alex nodded. “Lucy wants to figure out who we are.”
“That would be bad, right?”
Alex shrugged. She pulled the mask from her neck, staring down at it in her hands.
“Have you thought any more about telling them?” Kara asked, voice soft.
Alex traced the colors of the rainbow back and forth. Had she thought about it? Of course she had. She thought about it every time she saw them.
But…
“I don’t know. If I come out, I can’t take it back, you know? It’s out there and, and…”
“Real?”
Alex looked to Kara, then nodded.
“It is real, Alex,” Kara said. “This part of you is real.”
“I know, I know. I just…not yet, okay? I’m just not ready yet.”
“Okay. When you are, I’m here for you, alright?”
“I know.”
Alex pressed a kiss to Kara’s temple, then put the mask back on.
“Last one to the ground buys dinner tonight,” she said before rolling backwards to get on her feet and racing across the roof, diving right into a flip across the gap between the next building.
Sometimes when it’s slow, Supergirl hangs out at the skate park
Oh you KNOWWWW I’m gonna headcanon the everloving crap out of this:
Alex goes through a skating phase. She’s out of it by the time Kara arrives, but she still has a couple boards. Kara finds them and can’t stop asking questions. Alex takes her to the skate park for some show and tell but soon learns she has to physically sit with Kara to remind her not to go try. (A kid that faceplants with zero injuries or a kid who flies when the board gets away from them, which is more suspicious?)
So Alex takes her in the dead of night. The summer before they go to college especially, Alex gets nostalgic and sad she’s leaving so they go skating at 3 am, like, twice a week. And Kara can master all these physics, so she watches a YouTube video like once and masters the most insane tricks.
Fast forward several years and she’s Supergirl. Whenever Kara’s really homesick, Alex doesn’t know how to deal with it either. So she finds a skatepark and drags Kara there at 4 am until Kara starts to smile.
Winn finds out after Alex comes in early one morning with some splinters because of Kara breaking the fifth board that year and she was picking up the pieces. Winn builds her a board out of titanium alloy and trucks that’ll actually hold up to the weight she puts on them, plus wheels that are soft enough they won’t damage the concrete when she lands, and they’re self-healing in shape. It’s also decked out with some super-awesome Supergirl designs.
And Kara’s thrilled. Alex wants one immediately. (Winn is the crowd favorite at Christmas that year)
Kara’s flying back from a fire on a Saturday afternoon and happens to see some kids trying to master a trick at her favorite skate park and having a tough time of it…
The third Saturday afternoon of every month at a certain skate park, kids know they can get free skating lessons on the absolute hardest tricks from Supergirl herself—and she’s a really good, patient, encouraging, and helpful teacher. It’s one of the better kept secrets of National City’s resident hero. (Sledding help, she leaves to Guardian and his shield)
And if skate shops everywhere see an uptick in requests for Supergirl logos on their decks and helmets and knee pads and bandaids, well, that was a long time coming anyway.
After swooping in to save no less than fifty kids in an afternoon from a nasty spill as they try new tricks, Supergirl has a veritable army of slightly grungy and ripped-jeans 6-16 year olds ready to go to war if anyone badmouths her.
And after the RedK incident, they’re the ones that help her find peace with herself first. We all get pissed sometimes, a fifteen year old with blue hair tells her. We all do things we regret. You just gotta get back on the board and remember that you love the sport. She sometimes wonders if she even needed forgiving in their eyes.
AHHH!! It got something written for it!!! It’s amazing! This is so great. (Tbh I did have the soccer headcanon in the spirit when I was drawing this).
