J’onn takes his time figuring out what he wants to do. He has the time and he wants to do it right, do right by his father’s memory, but he hasn’t really ‘done nothing’ before so he volunteers. A soup kitchen on Mondays, the library on Tuesdays, a hospital on Wednesdays. He meets people and listens to their stories and shares [some of] his own and puts in the time and he finds it relaxes him, both the volunteering and the talking.

And one Saturday he’s out with Alex and Kara, getting brunch and catching up (like he wasn’t just at Kara’s apartment for Game Night two days ago), and one of the people he volunteers with – a lady from the soup kitchen or the library or something – notices him and says hello. J’onn calls her over and shakes her hand and introduces Alex and Kara.

“Oh! The girls!” The woman smiles. “Your father talks about you all the time!”

And Kara blushes and Alex swallows thickly and J’onn scratches the back of his neck.

But no one corrects her.

How could you?

Imagine for a moment, if Kara had been the one to suspect Jeremiah, all on her own, without anyone else’s prompting.

Imagine if she was the instigator of the plot, the driving force of the episode because she’s been down this road before, with Astra, with Alura, now this season with Zor-El. She more than anyone else knows what it’s like to lose a parental figure as a child and then be confronted with their flaws as an adult and have that rose tinted image of them shatter before you.

Jeremiah survived Cadmus for 10+ years. That meant he *had* to be broken in some way, in the same way Astra had to have changed after years in Fort Rozz and surviving on Earth. Kara would know that and she would be looking for signs to see how she could help with that healing process- and that could have very well have been the catalyst for her thinking that something is amiss.

(She also has X-Ray vision and Jeremiah walked into the DEO hurt, so it wouldn’t have taken much for her to see red flags if she just scanned him once over while he was getting checked out and cleared by medical.)

But back to the point- imagine how much more interesting to would have been to see Kara wrestle with herself, with her own optimism and hope and belief in the goodness in others in sharp contrast to all the lessons she has learned in S1 and with the S2 mid-season finale.

You could still have the boys walk it through with her. You could have her actually share a conversation with J’onn about it one-on-one since he’s the one who knew Jeremiah best outside of their family, and is also a mind-reader.

And most of all, that big confrontation with Alex would be so much more powerful if KARA was the one who started the investigation, because then you could bring in call backs to Alex seeing it as Kara not picking her/their family again (from Jeremiah). You could have a callback to how this fits into Kara feeling like Alex is slipping away. You could even have Alex argue that – our dad is not like your parents and aunt. The Humans vs Aliens theme touched on again.

So that when Kara is proven right about Jeremiah, and we get this scene with Alex falling apart, we could have had a callback, this time Kara catching Alex as she cried about her parent’s betrayal in the end. This time Kara comforting her sister because she knows what it feels like to be the sole survivor and beneficiary of the hard choices and sometimes terrible things her parents have done for the sake of protecting them.

Kara, at least in the first season, was closer to her mother. Alex is clearly her father’s child. Imagine if the show actually made this parallel in the episode and how much richer the story could have been.

Imagine if this show was about Kara and Alex again, and Kara was the driver of the plot of her own show.

You know what angers me the most about this scene? The fact that she’s alone.

I don’t know if they meant this or if I’m looking too much into it but this is a very cruel thing to do. And a very painful metaphor to execute. Because here’s Alex, the woman who often feels alone, left out and not good enough. Here’s Alex, the woman who loved her father more than anyone in the world. Here’s that woman, facing a man who’s far from being her father. Here she is, alone, left out and not good enough.

Alone because Kara was her only backup and she had to leave to fulfill her Supergirl duties. Left out because there’s no one else around her. And not good enough because she couldn’t arrest that man. Or shoot him. Or do anything to stop him. Suddenly she was that 14/15 year old girl who’s father vanished all over again.

Alone, left out, not good enough and powerless.

I don’t know if any of you are familiar with Into The Woods but it’s basically a metaphor about how sometimes you find yourself “in the woods” of life and you need to figure yourself out. Alex got into the woods with her sister but she’s alone now. And she’s probably still mad with her sister. Not for leaving, but for believing someone else. And now she’s mad at herself for not believing her sister.

Alex Danvers is inside the woods and she’s all alone. She’s going to lose herself in these woods, she’s going to free fall deep into that same dark hole Hank rescued her from.

There was another way to do this and I’m afraid the writers choose the not so good way…. With that being said, I’ll try not to think about this episode and this moment in specific and focus on this version of the story where the Alien Family, as a family, deal with this.

#i keep having feelings about that last gif #because she’s such a soldier #she’s having a breakdown #all alone #in a forest #but she’s still a soldier #she doesn’t just fall or stumble back against a tree #no #she takes a knee #she squats down and moves to one knee #gun still in hand #so she’s ready to move at a moments notice #that is the only respite she can give herself #this moment #this moment she can’t even fully have #because there could still be danger behind any tree #because her backup is gone #then she bottles it up #because she always has #because it has always been expected of her #ever since she lost him the first time #and if it wasn’t for maggie #nobody would have known exactly how much pain she’s in #and god her fall is going to hurt so much  via @nerdsbianhokie

between you and me – Kara/Alex ficlet

Winn’s going to the future.

So I wrote a thing.

between you and me

“Come on,” Kara whines, bouncing and tugging on Winn’s arm like petulance will absolutely work this time. “Just tell me one thing and I’ll stop asking.”

“No,” he says patiently, fingers not missing a beat over the keyboard, despite the jostling. “You will find out eventually; you just have to be patient.”

She huffs and flops down in the chair beside him. “But I don’t wanna wait; I wanna know my future now!” She stomps her feet and pouts. “Come on, just tell me one—”

“No!” he laughs and looks at her. “I promise it’s good. You’re gonna love it. But you have to wait for it.”

She grumbles, and sighs. “Fine. Then tell me something about Alex’s future.”

His smile drops and he turns immediately back to the computer. “Oh no. No, no. Telling you the future is a bad idea; telling Alex? Suicide.”

“But you’re not telling Alex her future,” Kara reasons, scooting her chair right up against his. “You’re telling me. Therefore; not suicide.”

“One—” He sends her a glance. “You can’t keep a secret from her to save your life. Two, you can’t keep a secret from her to save my life. So no. No Alex-future either.”

“Then I won’t tell her til after you leave. By the time you get back, she’ll have forgotten all about it.”

Winn scoffs, sending her a look. “Please. That woman has a memory like a steel trap. You know how often she just suddenly hits me for doing things I don’t even remember doing? Like telling you she was the one that broke your creepy horse statue.” He turns toward her sharply. “Which, okay; was that me? Cause I didn’t even know it was broken ‘til she accused me, but she swears up and down I—”

“She did what?” Kara’s face falls to confusion laced betrayal. “But…when? Wait…” Kara pauses, thinking. “Wait. No, yeah, when could this have happened, cause it was fine when I left for work, like, four hours ago.”

Winn freezes, eyes flicking away. “Uh…” Then his eyes slip a little wide. “Oh my god…” He looks back at her, shell-shocked. “I did tell you.” He slumps back. “Damn it, she was right.”

Kara narrows her eyes. “How is this conversation happening in the past tense when my horse statue is intact at this very moment in time?”

Winn stiffens, eyes, once again, going wide, before he turns away, face burning red, eyes back on his computer screen. “No reason. I was mistaken. That was a complete misspoken misha—ahh!”

Kara snatches him out of the chair, frog-marching him up and away from any prying ears, before pushing him into a wall.

“That is Alex behavior,” he wails. “You’re supposed to be better than that! You’re supposed to be the nice—”

She cuts him off with a sharp finger in his face. “You have two seconds to tell me Alex isn’t still alive four-hundred years from now.”

“Alex isn’t still alive four-hundred years from now,” he dutifully squeaks.

She glares. “Are you lying?”

He withers. “Yes? I mean, no! No? No, no.” He shakes his head. “No, definitely not lying,” he lies. Obviously.

Kara stares him down, then blinks.

Then begins thinking.

And thinking.

Then she turns sharp eyes back to him. “Winn.”

He gulps. “Yeah?”

She clicks her tongue, hesitating. “I’m gonna ask you a question.”

He winces. “I really wish you wouldn’t.”

“I’m gonna ask you a question, and I need you to tell me the truth.”

He sighs, resigned, and nods.

Kara licks her lips, afraid to ask, afraid to know, afraid she’s wrong. But she asks. “Do Alex and I…are we…cause there’s only so many ways she could possibly survive and theoretically, soul-bonding with a Kryptonian would…” She lets out a shaky breath and turns away, fighting tears, before looking back at him. “Do I…I mean do I get…is she mine?”

His face softens and he steps forward, pulling her into a tight hug while she shudders through a sob.

He turns his head, lips next to her ear, and whispers, “Don’t tell her I told you; she really likes telling everyone how surprised you were when she finally kissed you.”
