The Code
Lucy’s fingers squeezed the metal she was sitting on. She stared up at the orange sky, refusing to look down.
“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” she said.
Alex laughed. “It only took us eight years.”
“It isn’t safe,” Lucy said.
“Don’t stress, Luce,” Maggie said. “You fall, I can see four aliens from here who could catch you, and that’s not counting Kara or J’onn who are probably paying very close attention to us right now.”
Lucy huffed. “Not the point.”
“Hey.” Alex’s voice was soft, calming.
Lucy took a deep breath. She look away from the single cloud in the sky to look at Alex.
“We’ll keep you safe.”
Safe. Not just from falling from the top of the Ferris Wheel they had climbed up with no safety equipment, but from the father who had decided to track her down years after she had left and, apparently, ran an anti-alien taskforce.
Lucy nodded. “I know. I trust you.”
She took another deep breath, then looked down at the grounds.
Her grip on the metal tightened, her stomach flipped, but she looked.
And she could see everything.
Their trailers parked beyond a few rows of trees.
The lights of the front arch flashing as they were tested.
The first curious townies watching from the sidewalks.
Multiple other carnies looking up at them every few moments.
It wasn’t just Maggie and Alex she could trust. The people down there had become her family, were her family. We stick together they had told her, because we’re all we have.
“I trust you.”
AU in which J’onn runs a primarily alien staffed traveling carnival that occasionally picks up human strays.
