Cat runs out of patience at approximately eleven thirty in the morning on Thursday–when all her departments are supposed to have layout and content finalized for the weekend edition. Instead, all she has in her inbox are excuses. She has two real choices, as she sees it: she can fire everyone in a fit of pique or she can excuse herself from the building before she burns down her empire. She sends out a threatening e-mail, telling everyone that if their work is not completed by midnight, they ought to start looking for new employment, and then takes her private elevator down to her town car.

She eases her sunglasses onto the thin bridge of her nose and zips across town, following a very familiar route. The closer she gets, the more relaxed she feels. By the time she steps out onto the curb, her shoulders have lowered away from her ears, and she’s no longer grinding her teeth. As she pushes the glass door open, she listens to the tingle of the bell and waits for her arrival to be noted. She waits for thirty seconds and then strolls inward. The studio at the back of the building is bright with a large wall of windows letting in natural light while giving the resident a great, unrestricted view of the park beyond.
